Re: [uml2-dev] UML2 Revival

There's this PR:

https://github.com/eclipse-uml2/uml2/pull/126

From there you can get to his GitHub profile

https://github.com/juergen-albert

From that  you can see the long track record of activity.

That being said, there are no merged commits in UML2's repository attributed to him, just pending PRs, hence the merit question specifically with respect to UML2.

Hi

I beg Jürgen's pardon.

There is therefore a problem in that my usage of GIT person searches totally failed to locate his activities.

a) no relevant response for the menu pulldown for "@j" in an issue message

b) no relevant matches on https://gitlab.eclipse.org/explore for "albert"

Hardly surprising since for issue content searches I am already aware that GIT only finds 20% of what Bugzilla finds when Bugzilla is working. (OCL bugs are present on both.)

Hi Ed

GIT for UML2 credits me with work on Bugs 526568, 420338, 529547 so electing me does not required the project to be declared dysfunctional.

Jürgen unfortunately has no GIT contribution record hence the need to declare the project dysfunctional. It is not clear that Jürgen is a committer for any project.

Perhaps we should wait till Jürgen has familiarized with Eclipse practices via a couple of GIT contributions before electing him.

I very much hope that Kenn continues at least as a committer so that we don't lose his invaluable knowledge of the project history.

Jürgen and Ed,

Because my original email was not to uml2-dev, this thread is not visible in the archive.   I've corrected the address to uml2-dev@xxxxxxxxxxx on this email.

Kenn,

I suggest that you start an election for Jürgen and Ed.  Please link to this email and include commentary about the need to reboot the project with active committers who have a vested interest in providing maintenance support.

Please also consider whether you intend to continue as project lead or intend to continue as a committer.  That's totally your choice.

Wayne,

I consider this to be kind of an exceptional circumstance that will not properly conform to the "demonstrated merit" expectations, but is needed for life-support.

Ed

Hi,

I fully understand your position here and appreciate the work you already do on the other projects, as we use OCL and QVT already.

I’m sure I can help with b and c, even though if I might need some pointers for the UML 2.5.1. I have to see, how much time I’d be able to spend on the backlog, but I’m sure it is more, then it currently gets.

How would be the process here now? @Ed Merks: Would you name Edward and me PL and/or Committer, or how would this work with the current Team in hibernation?

Jürgen.

Hi Jürgen

Active well-informed contributors are nearly always welcome.

I'm inclined to split the activities three ways:

a) keep the project ticking over as-is

  • Produce new builds.
  • Maintain the project's update site on download.eclipse.org.
  • Maintain the PMI content.
  • Contribute update-to-data content to SimRel.

This largely involves responding to the too-frequent Java and EF infrastructure changes.

b) enhance the project's documentation/web presence

  • Respond to discussions.
  • Maintain the PMI content.

Accommodate the obsolescence of the Eclipse Wiki.

c) enhance the project's functionality

  • Resolve issues.
  • Merge pull requests.
  • Respond to discussions.
  • Produce new builds.
  • Maintain the PMI content.
There is a Bugzilla backlog, notably UML 2.5.1. The project is very stable so safety and inertia strongly discourage any changes.

I'm responsible for OCL and QVTd, I help with QVTo and I keep MoDisco alive. I am therefore in a good position to tackle a) i.e. keep UML2 alive, in particular catching up on the recent EF infrastructure changes.

However I'm well past retirement age, so I'm generally looking to lose rather than gain responsibilities.

Plenty of opportunities for new team members.

Ed Willink

Hi Ed(s),

as we have a vested interest in that project as well, I'd like to pitch in as much as I can.

In the interest of openness and transparency in my role and Modeling PMC lead,  I post this email on the project's dev list.

The project is badly in need of active committers for the following activities:

  • Resolve issues.
  • Merge pull requests.
  • Respond to discussions.
  • Produce new builds.
  • Maintain the project's update site on download.eclipse.org.
  • Maintain the PMI content.
  • Contribute update-to-data content to SimRel.

I understand that Kenn Hussey no longer has the capacity for these activities. Ed Willink has offered to take over these tasks. I wanted to bring this situation to the attention of the people that I see have been relatively recently involve in providing pull requests and opening issues and which appear to have UML2 dependencies in SimRel.

Unless others also volunteer to get involved, I will recommend that Kenn elected Ed for these activities.
