It should be theoretically possible; but many existing WMS servers will die if you try to request a raster that large from them.
A0 at 1200 dpi is a lot of pixels :-P

In such cases it is really recommended to print from vector content such as a wfs; I have printed to A0 using wfs.

Note this is also a case where printing directly (rather than going to a PDF file) is much better; as each stripe of information sent to the printer can be done as an individual wms request.
