Hi Gerald:
What you describe is a "join" - often people "join" a shapefile to
another source of data such as a CSV file - this is not something we
support at this time.
On the bright side there is some work on GeoTools trunk on
"application schema" support which has provided the technical
facilities to support these kind of ideas (they call it "feature
chaining" - but it amounts to a join).
