Hey:
Can you check if there is a "jre" folder included with the uDig 1.1.1
you downloaded? If present uDig will use a "jre" that is shipped with
it. We often do this in order to ship Java Advanced Imaging as a java
plugin.
Depending on what your answer is:
- try renaming it to "jre2" so that it will try using your default linux jre
- try downloading a jre from here
http://udig.refractions.net/files/downloads/jre/ for linux and see if
it helps
