Re: [udig-users] adding layer takes ages, still waiting

Hi Jody,

No space in the path.
Didn't find the walkthrough 1 shapes but tried some random shapes on the Internet (mostly small datasets without projection file). Same result program stalls on the Add Layer screen for hours with no result.
Deleted workspace, reinstalled, ran it on an easy point shape - nothing.
Even after I cancel the layer, the little progress bar bottom right continues to run.
Can't find the log in the configuration file either.

*half hour later*

But then suddenly I type on the workbench logo on the screen and the workspace opens up and the layers are there. But the progress bar keeps running as if it's doing something, maybe this kept it from opening up.

Well anyway, thanks a lot. This version indeed manages my projection: ETRS_1989_LAEA.
I'll now start to explore, sorry for the trouble.

Hi Erik:

Can you give me some more information? I am on vista (which by all
accounts is more trouble then XP and I am not having trouble). The
windows zip includes a "jre" so that should be even less trouble.

We have had one report of problems when the workspace has a "space" in
the filename; that may be the case with XP eh? "Documents and
Settings\Erick\udig" for example. So far this bug report has only
applied to sld files and geotiff - do your shapefiles have an "sld"
file defined for styling?

Other than that you are going to need to track down your log and let
me know if you see a strack trace (or email me the thing). You will
find instructions in udig online help about the log; but it is
basically a file in the configuration folder.

Because you have the same issue on XP and Ubuntu I am especially confused.
Can you try with the sample shapefiles from walkthrough 1? If you have
shapefiles that were rare enough to confuse uDig 1.1 (ie a projection
the developers do not often work with) perhaps you are also confusing
uDig 1.2 in some way.
