There is the pure JGrass that doesn't need it at all, but that one
does mainly hydro-geomorphology and some base raster GIS.
If you want to exploit the big powers of GRASS also, then the answer
is: for the linux and mac case yes, you need to install it.
Just a binary version is ok, and it could be shipped with JGrass. That
is what we do with the windows version.

Compatibility is no problem. But it really depends on what you need to
do, since not all the GRASS commands are usable. Some of them need
interaction with the GRASS monitor, which doesn't exist in that case.
If you have questions and doubts, I would be glad to IRC them with
you, in order to tell you all the hidden powers and problems :)
