So I would like a hand making this decision.

It looks from quick discussion on geotools-devel that replacing this dependency is possible, but doing so would put us in limbo without any ETA. Would need to patch geotools trunk, and then upgrade udig to use it.

It also goes against my initial plan of leaving the dependencies fixes, so we were not trying to review a moving target.

So I expect this is a good long term plan, and I should issues a separate request for a "pre-existing exemption" on Java 3D to the technology-pmc list. Same approach as the others, this is a formal java extension that we expect to be in the JRE.

Frank had some good ideas about alleviating the setup difficulty with respect to these java extensions, but that can be the subject for another email thread when he is ready.
