We run a WMS Service using ESRI's ArcIMS WMS connector that is configured to by default output 24-bit PNG images for the 'FORMAT=image/png' WMS request parameter.  I have noticed an issue when testing against our services using both uDig 1.1.1 and 1.2.RC2 on Windows where the transparency channel is not detected by uDig.  I've tested the same identical images that are requested via uDig off of our web server in GIMP and other desktop image software and there have been no issues in detecting the transparency.  

Is this a known issue in uDig?  We need to output 24-bit PNG in order to show the full color range available in some of our layers (weather data and satellite imagery with a broad color palette).
