Paul, simply put, I can't control the zoom tool, the results are completely
unexpected. Now, I see where you're heading to, having something that
allows you to center the new view where you want first, and decide
about its size later. I think it should be a nice thing to have, but maybe
something to have when you're pressing some key while zooming (CTRL.,
SHIFT, whatever).... it's just that I've never used something that worked
like this, so my first thougth was that it was broken.

Yet, the zoom tool is not the thing that worries me most, nor the performance:
it's the registry. Why I see all of the shapefiles in a flat list? This is a
bit nonsense to me, because I'm used to see folders with tens to hundreds
shapefiles in it, possibily with multiple versions of the same files in
different states held into different subfolders. If I understand it right (I
hope not) and every file gets listed as a flat list, this would soon become
a bit of a mess.

Also, I'm not sure about it, but I hope the registry contents are per-project,
since different projects may have to work with very different set of files.
Some of the registry contents may be general enough to be always there,
but as a user I would not be happy to see all of my datastores and shapefiles
always there. Just my opinion ;-)

Best regards
Andrea Aime
