Hi Mikel.
Thank you for your email and your interest in Eclipse ThreadX. ThreadX is now fully open source at Eclipse under the MIT license. We see it as a strategic project for our Embedded and IoT ecosystem. You can have a broad overview of project activities here:
https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/iot.threadxThe Foundation does not have developers on its staff, apart from the people maintaining our internal infrastructure and services. So, the actual continuity of the project is not in the hands of the Foundation but of the open source community. The ThreadX project will continue for as long as there are people willing to work on the codebase. I strongly encourage anyone with an interest and expertise in ThreadX to think about what they could contribute to the project.
The Foundation's role is to provide the infrastructure and services its open source projects need. From a ThreadX perspective, this means we will ensure ThreadX remains certified for safety-critical applications.
The Foundation intends to maintain the safety certifications that Azure RTOS had. Right now, we are working on transferring the existing certificates for the 6.1.x series with SGS Tüv Saar. Once this is done, we will start planning for the certification of the 6.4.x series. We cannot commit to a specific timeframe for that, however, as we need to muster proper funding and staffing to support the certification efforts.
We cannot give access to the safety documentation at this time since the certificates are still under Microsoft's name. Once the transfer is done, we will provide access to the documentation to interested Eclipse Foundation member organisations. Last month, the board of the Eclipse Foundation also approved the principle of the "ThreadX Alliance", a program that will enable non-Eclipse members to support the ThreadX project financially and purchase the safety documentation. We are currently working on the program's implementation and will disclose more as we get closer to the launch date.
I hope this helps. Do not hesitate to reply if you have additional questions.
Best Regards,
