Dear community,
If you’re building a product on Theia commercially and haven’t looked into sponsoring it, now’s a good time to.
Theia just had its most active year yet (1,207 commits from 78 contributors, up 25% and 14% year over year), and much of that activity comes from outside the handful of companies that maintain it commercially. Turning all of that into a shipped, stable release each cycle depends on a core team, which performs the necessary code reviews, ensures compatibility and security, dependency upkeep, and release engineering. That part doesn’t run on volunteer time. It’s funded by a mix of the maintaining organizations’ own investment and sponsorship from companies that depend on Theia commercially. Many companies that build on Theia, however, don’t sponsor it yet.
That funding is what turns all this activity into shipped results. A few examples, among many: STMicroelectronics rebuilding its STM32CubeMX2 tool on Theia, Samsung building its Sokatoa GPU profiler on it, Arduino rebuilding its IDE 2.0 on it, and Theia AI earning a Codie 2025 Award for best open-source AI developer tool.
Right now that’s a healthy loop: a platform worth building on attracts new contributors, more contributors mean more testing and hardening, and that makes it even more worth building on. It runs the same way in reverse if the core-team capacity behind it gets overloaded. Investing while that loop still points up costs a lot less than trying to reverse one that’s already pointing down, especially if you’re planning to maintain your product on Theia for years, not just this release.
