[theia-dev] Licensing difference

Dear Theia Dev Members group,

We are evaluating the usage of Theia for custom IDE editor. I have been looking at details on the license page and there is a slight discrepancy which would appreciate to get clarity on.

 

• The main repo is under EPL 2.0 license eclipse-theia/theia: Eclipse Theia is a cloud & desktop IDE framework implemented in TypeScript. (github.com)
• The blueprint repo is under MIT license (changed from EPL 2.0 in the last 6 months) eclipse-theia/theia-blueprint: The Eclipse IDE is a modern and open IDE for cloud and desktop. The Theia IDE is based on the Theia platform. The Theia IDE is available as a downloadable desktop application. You can also try the latest version of the Theia IDE online. For more details, see the Readme below. (github.com)
• On the theia-blueprient readme states “ The Theia IDE has been rebranded from its original name “Theia Blueprint”. To avoid any confusion, the repository and code artifacts will keep the name “Blueprint”. You can therefore assume the terms “Theia IDE” and “Theia Blueprint” to be synonymous.“

 

Questions:

• If the difference is in rebranding, why the two repos are still active?
• If they are synonymous, why do they have different license terms?
• Is there a more detailed view of what is the actual difference between both?
