Dear members of the PMC,

I want to inform you regarding the ongoing process of rebranding the Eclipse Dataspace Connector project (https://www.eclipse.org/dataspaceconnector/) to Eclipse Dataspace Components (to stick to EDC).

The reason simple: The scope of the project has changed since we started in June 2021. Meanwhile, we address a broader scope of building (decentralized) data spaces, rather than only implementing the corresponding Connector component, as initially planned. Goals and support of initiatives, that are named in our project description won’t change. We just add more, cool stuff!

While the Connector consist of a control plane that orchestrates the data exchange (using various data planes) between participants and services within a data space, and still is a major part of the project, we as community also worked on implementing complementary services, due to missing alternatives.  Thereby we implemented a Catalog, Identity Hub, and Registry component and also provide a repository with a Minimum Viable Dataspace (MVD) as a sample implementation of a dataspace that leverages the Eclipse Dataspace Components. The main purpose is to demonstrate the capabilities of the EDC, make dataspace concepts tangible based on a specific implementation, and to serve as a starting point to implement a custom dataspace based on our components.

The rebranding is initiated but not finished, while we aim on all steps during October. Therefore, Github-Org still points to https://github.com/eclipse-dataspaceconnector, but already show the different repositories for the different components, if you are interested.

If there are any questions, do not hesitate to contact me!

Best,
Markus
