[sumo-user] Questions on shared space in sumo

Dear SUMO Team,

My name is Jakob Ruzicka, and I work as a transport planner for the City of Salzburg. Due to extensive renovation of sewer pipes and utility lines, we are presented with the opportunity to redesign the public space of two prominent squares and improve the traffic system accordingly. To forecast the traffic-related impacts of these measures, I am using the microscopic traffic simulation tool SUMO for the first time.

As part of the simulation, I am developing a multimodal model and comparing the following scenarios:

  1. Existing street layout with traffic signal control
  2. New street layout with priority rules and pedestrian crossings
  3. New street layout with priority rules but no pedestrian crossings
  4. Shared space (encounter zone)

I was able to successfully implement scenarios 1–3 in SUMO. However, I am facing challenges with scenario 4 (shared space):

  • In my model, a walking area was created across the entire intersection, which is used by both pedestrians and vehicles. However, pedestrians and vehicles do not interact and appear to pass through each other, as if operating on separate layers (see screenshot). The "striping" pedestrian model was used.

  • In an effort to identify the error, I constructed a simplified test model with four edges and one intersection. North–South is enabled for passenger, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic, while West–East is limited to pedestrians and bicycles. In this test case, no shared space seems to be formed, and pedestrians appear to teleport across the intersection (see screenshot).

I would therefore appreciate your insights on the following questions:

  • Does anyone have experience simulating shared spaces in SUMO?
  • Can someone help identify where the error in my model might be?
  • Is there any detailed guide on how to correctly implement shared spaces in SUMO? The documentation currently available is unfortunately quite brief.

Thank you in advance for your technical support.

Kind regards, Jakob Ruzicka
