WRT editors, I used Syntext Serna which is a commercial product:

However, the free, standard edition of XMLmind XML Editor also has very
good DITA support:

Ideally, I would like to use Eclipse to author the DITA content. I am
trying to follow the steps outlined here, but I'm not convinced that the
DITA template described is implemented yet in Eclipse:
