Are you running the latest pre-built application for Linux or are you running from the Eclipse Development environment?
What Java version are your running?
What Eclipse version? You should be running e4

Please see these three recently updated doc pages

If there is a linux version problem you might want to try those two links to build on the machine you are using.
Do you have a stack trace you can share? The binary file is not that informative...

I am having a problem getting STEM running on linux. I have Eclipse and
java 64 bit installed.

I have tried the 64 bit versions.
