[stellation-res] Firebird

I have been working on getting Firebird going under Windows. Unlike Dave, I
have been using the newer version of Firebird. I have been testing with the
"super" version of Firebird 1.0.2 and have been using their type 4 JDBC
driver called JayBird. The "super" version is a pure client/server version
as opposed to the "classic" version which is a direct-connect architecture
with some shared capability and optional remote connection support.

The new Java driver is a full JCA/JDBC type 4 driver that is fully supported
by the development community, as opposed to the Interclient driver which is
no longer being enhanced or supported. The new driver is simpler to install
than the Interclient driver and provides advanced services such as
connection pooling and a direct interface for database creation and deletion
that does not require a dummy database to connect to.

I believe that we should decide whether to go with the older technology or
with the newer technology. There are a number of differences between the the
two products and from what I can see the newer technology should scale much
better. If we want to, we could choose to support both technologies but I
can't see a compelling reason to do so.

I am in a position to do the work required for Firebird using the new
technology, both on Linux and on Windows since I now have a Linux box as
well as my Windows machine. However, I think we should come to a consensus
before I do any more work in this area.

Regards

Jonathan
