That's interesting. I'm actually dead opposite. I need to write out
what's going on, in order to get it clear enough in my head to be able
to write the code. When I just code away,
I tend to create massive disasters. (Programmer psychology
is actually one of my side interests, and I find it
really fascinating watching how differently people 
approach programming and algorithmic problems.)

If you wanted to submit a paper to the SCM workshop, you
would need to be able to travel to attend it. That costs
a lot of money; most people won't go unless their employer
is willing to pay the costs of the trip.
