The merge algorithm for text artifacts is based on the
merge algebra work of David LeBlang, the founder of Atria
software and the original author of ClearCase. Unfortunately, it's
damned near impossible to get hold of the papers describing it - they're
not on the net, and they don't appear in current reprints of the
workshops where they were published. The only way I managed to get a
copy was to order a print-on-demand authorized photostat of Walter
Tichy's SCM text - which took three months, and cost $80.

If you do a web search for merge algebra, you'll find some information,
but I don't think it'll be any easier to understand than the docs it
TextUtils.java.

Do you have specific questions about it, or is my explanation in the
docs sufficiently unclear that you don't understand it at all?
