Re: [soc-dev] Introduction and Interest in Contributing to Eclipse

Hi Akhila,

Thank you for your interest in contributing.

A good starting point is to explore the Eclipse projects portal and identify a project or ecosystem that aligns with your interests:
https://projects.eclipse.org/

Once you have a domain in mind, look for its “Get involved”, “Contributing”, or “How to contribute” pages. Most ecosystems provide clear guidance. For example:

After identifying a potential project:

  • Read the contributing guide in its repository
  • Set up the project locally and ensure you can build it
  • Look for issues labelled “good first issue” on GitHub

To engage with the community:

  • Participate in the project's GitHub discussions (if applicable)
  • Join the relevant chat channels. Some communities, such as Jakarta EE or SDV, use Slack. Others, such as the Eclipse Platform, use Matrix.
  • Browse and subscribe to mailing lists: https://accounts.eclipse.org/mailing-list

If you already have a specific domain in mind, feel free to mention it and I could point you in a more precise direction.

Best regards,

Thomas Froment

Hi Eclipse Team,

I’m Akhila, a student developer with a strong interest in Java and open-source development. I’ve been exploring projects under the Eclipse Foundation and I’m really inspired by the impact and scale of the ecosystem.

I’m looking forward to contributing, learning from the community, and improving my skills by working on real-world projects. Please let me know how I can get started or if there are any beginner-friendly issues I can take up.

Thank you,
Akhila
