yep, I've recognized this too.
IMHO, we could cross-register all Eclipse mentors as a backup,
technically. Effectively, I have no idea what you're working on. So I'm
not sure if this really would help the students.

Please only volunteer for those proposals that you actually intend to mentor. The good folks at Google will likely make us demonstrate that a mentor can handle more than two projects, so if you intend to volunteer for more than two, please send us a note with some motivation for your choice and a few words about how you intend to balance mentoring responsibilities.
The deadline is next Monday, April 20th. We'll periodically check over the weekend to keep our slot allocation request up to date.
