[soc-dev] Introducing the GeoTrellis project

Hi, my name is Rob Emanuele, and I'm the tech lead for the GeoTrellis project (http://geotrellis.io). GeoTrellis is a LocationTech (http://www.locationtech.org/) project that does geospatial data processing, focusing on being very fast at processing large sets of raster data. It's a Scala library that is used to create web tools with enough speed to allow for interactive design. There is also a lot of development going on around running GeoTrellis operations on the Spark cluster engine for processing Big raster sets in at speeds that allow interactive analysis.

We have 3 project ideas on the GSoC idea page: https://wiki.eclipse.org/Google_Summer_of_Code_2014_Ideas

One of the projects, a GeoTiff reader, already has a student interested, Johan Stenberg. Johan has talked over strategy with us on the mailing list and IRC, and we're excited about the prospects of his contributions. We'd like to find students interested in the other projects as well.

If you are interested in working on a Scala project at the intersection of fast processing, big data, and geospatial technologies, please let us know!

Cheers,
Rob
