1.6? I'd say 1.7 would be OK. I'm sure the user base is fairly manageable right now so get ahead while you can.

Plus Oracle stopped releasing public updates for 1.6 almost 2 years ago.

All downstream projects that I know of have moved to at least Java 6 (some, but not all, have moved to Java 7)

If anyone has an urgent need for Java 5 support now’s the time to say :)
