The fact that people stick to an old codebase is really also our main concern and the driving force for the discussion to abandon RCP as the base.
As an example the SWT that is part of RCP 3.8 only allows a very old version of XULRunner to be embedded and since some people are now mixing rienadesktop clients with embedded web apps (_javascript_, html) software we had to find a way to upgrade an old
RCP version with the newest SWT.
Currently Riena in the repo has a project and repo called „org.eclipse.riena.3xtargets“ which is pretty much a checked in version of the .jars of RCP 3.8 plus the „upgrades“ from the newer versions of SWT.
Not pretty…..
Once we abandon RCP we are in good shape, I think, and will return to deliver on the train.
Thanks for the heads up. I don't think any PMC approval is needed at the RT level for this decision. +1 in case there is.
My main concern is the maintainability of the 3.x RCP codebase that your largest community is using. Has that part been any issues for you in keeping that running smoothly?

Betreff: Siena leaving the Eclipse Release Train
Hello RT-PMC
Today we are announcing the decision to lease the Eclipse Release Train for the moment.
Reasons are detailed in this bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=500733and
any discussion is welcomed of course.
Riena will continued to be maintained and new features will be added since we have a very active userbase that continues to rely on it. However the large effort of supporting 3 platforms (4.x., 3.x. and RAP) made us choose to just
no longer be on the release train.
We will return…..
Regards
christian
