Jeanette,
The parser used for indexing is rather simple (but fast) and does not
collect the meta information.
One workaround (hack) is to have a invisible tag (use css style
display:none) that contains those words, but I think this is not really
bullet proof and accessibility settings (ignoring styles) may reveal the
hidden content.

Is there any way to add meta information or other tagging to an HTML file
to add alternative search keywords to a topic? There are several ways to
refer to one concept in our product and we want to be able to put
alternative search keywords in a file without them showing up in the text.
