Re: [platform-dev] 25 years of the Eclipse IDE: we need your stories and ideas

Hi Lars,

Thanks for contributing this text and sharing your work. I see the link as a useful example of community initiative, and I’m curious to hear others’ views.

MCP is certainly relevant: we discussed it both at our “Eclipse IDE in the era of AI” BoF and at our face-to-face meeting in Sankt Leon-Rot in September...

From my perspective, it deserves the attention of the Eclipse IDE Working Group, contributors and committers alike. Several working group representatives are already copied here, so I’d welcome their thoughts alongside those of the wider community.

Best regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Matthias Becker reminded me that I should also contribute to your text. What about this short text:

````
The Eclipse IDE and RCP framework have been a cornerstone of software development for the last 25 years. In the world of AI, Eclipse is evolving into a backend for AI engines with the help of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and will therefore hopefully keep its position as an important developer tool.
Unfortunately, MCP support is not part of the Eclipse standard distribution, and it should not become part of it either, as it needs to move fast: my MCP server receives daily or at least weekly updates to keep up with the changes. So the above post could point to https://github.com/vogellacompany/eclipse-mcp-server, unless you consider that advertising. The repo is free and EPL-licensed.
Best regards,
Lars
Hi everyone,
This November marks the 25th anniversary of the Eclipse IDE, SDK and Platform.
We would like to use this opportunity to tell some of the story behind these 25 years, not only the technology itself, but also the projects, products, technical milestones, people and organisations that have shaped this ecosystem.
For that, we need your help.
We are aiming to collect at least 25 community stories, and contributions do not need to be polished or complete. Personal memories, technical milestones, products built on Eclipse, old screenshots or material, short testimonials, anecdotes, or simply ideas and pointers to people or stories we should follow up on are all very welcome.
Please add anything that comes to mind directly to the GitLab issue (or reply here):
https://gitlab.eclipse.org/eclipsefdn/helpdesk/-/work_items/7813
The target date is 16 October, so we have time to turn these contributions into material for the anniversary in November.
Many of you have been part of this ecosystem for a long time, so your perspective can really help us capture pieces of its history that might otherwise be missed...
Thanks for your help!
Thomas
