We currently don't support that. The open bug for this is https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=532695

This might be easier these days as Rolf implemented automatic update of the icons in the toolbar if the tool item icon URL changes.

Also related with replacement of icons (for views) is this partly finished Gerrit

Would be great if this gets implemented, this would also allow to implement theme specific icons without hacks like the darkest theme does with AspectJ.
