I do agree with your point that improving photran fundamentally is an important task; I hope to contribute to photran in that way as well. However, this aspect does not preclude my current focus of making netbeans compatible with core functionalities of photran.
On a side note, I am wondering how widely used Photran is. Does anyone have a rough figure?

I suppose I'm biased, but why not devote your efforts to making Photran better? IMHO you'd be much more productive, and the result is likely to be appreciated by a far broader community.

My original reasoning for proposing the work is that the current Netbeans project is not very mature in Fortran support. In my experience with Netbeans, the Fortran support is no where near Photran in eclipse (After Craig's point, I looked up Netbeans dependency, and yes indeed, Netbeans does use Open Fortran Parser.)
Yes, I would imagine quite a bit of GUI code in Photran needs to be redone, and that is precisely the work that I think I can do. If the scope is going to be on the order of man-year, then may be I can only implement only a few core functionalitities, but I think it may be worth my shot. I don't know much about parser and refactoring technologies, and I certainly do not which to create them from scratch :)
