+1. However, we should include a link for traditional access?
Does this also include a possible revamp of the web client? Does anyone know of a free open-source nntp reader that's better than what we have now?
Cheers,

[phoenix-dev] Newsgroups web interface |
Team,
Recent discussions on bug 78265 [1] lead me to conclude that a large portion of our users are uncomfortable with old-school newsgroups, or are simply unable to access them because of corporate firewall rules. Many would prefer a web forum, and judging by some of the comments in the bug, many people didn't know we had a simple web interface to our newsgroups:
http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/
I'd like to suggest that, when linking to a newsgroup, we discontinue linking to the NNTP group via news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.group.name, and instead link to the web interface group via http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.group.name . For everyone's convenience, we should also provide a link to the registration page as well [2]. For instance, in a typical HTML page/email, we could use this terminology:
... join the discussion on the project newsgroup (registration required).
Thoughts?
