Did you try connecting with an empty string for the client id? The revision to the spec says that with a zero length client it will generate one on the server. Unless the _javascript_ client checks for that(and if it does it should be easy to patch) it should work if the server supports it. Note that not only is that new in the 3.1.1 spec, but us also optional.

Connecting without client ID is available since MQTT spec 3.1.1

I'm afraid _javascript_ client is NOT fully implemented v3.1.1 spec.

I’m using the Paho _javascript_ Client to connect to a HiveMQ MQTT server. When I try to connect without client ID it says:

Uncaught Error: AMQJS0013E Invalid argument api.xxxxx.com for host.

I can’t find more details about it in the documentation and HiveMQ says that connecting without client ID is possible.
