Re: [p2-dev] Multiple versions of our features

This is exactly why I brought it up on the p2 list, the p2 team has great ideas :)

I know it's not a p2 issue, but since p2 enables week2week updates, I thought others here would have some thoughts / insights.  Also, it's p2s fault (since p2 is the reason we do week 2 week upgrades ;) ).  See, you try to do something good for the community, and it causes problems... what's the lesson here? :)

I'll bring this conversation to PDE since for 3.5 that is probably the best place to get this fixed.

Thanks for your help Pascal.

cheers,
ian

Also maybe some help could be provided by PDE a) to have the versions sorted b) to ensure that when pointed at a target that has been prosvisioned not all features are shown.

This is not a p2 issue. p2 is just the messenger :) Bring that against Platform / Releng.
The difficulty for this problem is that you need to have a part of your version that changes without retagging and it also needs to be stable.

Thanks Pascal,

Yep, I know about the presentation, and this is one side of it..That bug is referring to an enhancement to improve presentation. What's happening to me, is I'm actually in a situation where I'm forced to choose a version.  I will raise this there, but I think either the severity of that bug needs to be raised, or a new bug opened.

ian

[p2-dev] Multiple versions of our features

I have been doing week2week upgrades of the SDK using p2.  When I go to craft a product based on features, I appear to have multiple versions of the same feature in my target (multiple versions of the RCP feature for example).  However, the features only differ in the qualifier (not the human readable part either), so I really am guessing which feature to install.

Also, if I select the wrong version, export fails.

I think we need a better story around this.  Is this something we're targeting for 3.5? Is it reasonable to only show the latest version of the feature (possibly with a check box that shows all versions for those developers fluent in Base 16).

      cheers,
      ian
