Hi folks,
After some more discussion in and around the OpenSCENARIO 2 Implementers Forum I figured I would contact you together as reps for some of the open source tools of interest to see if we can have an open discussion. To those that took part
in the Forum meeting this Tuesday, please feel free to correct me or make additions! Some quick introductions:
@Paul Buck : VP Community Development, Eclipse Foundation
@Riexinger Andreas (XC/PRM-PE-ADDA): OpenADx (Sidenote to Andy, who
is coordinating Scenario Architect?)
@Emil Knabe: esmini
@Duong Quang, Tuan: OpenPass
@fabian.oboril@xxxxxxxxx: Carla
@Gil Amid: PL OSC 2 Development Project
@Carlo van Driesten: Open source implementations in the OSC2 implementers
forum
@Pierre Mai: Language Working Group Lead OSC 2
So far the implementers forum has, to be blunt, struggled to get started as the group often gets mired down in abstract discussions. As you all know, OpenSCENARIO 2 does not yet exist, so we need to start with something and adapt it as
the standard develops. I strongly feel that the forum and OSC2 would benefit greatly from us just getting stuck in implementing in some form or other, maybe open source can lead by example. This would help give the implementers forum something concrete for
their discussions and greatly accelerate the progress there.
As confirmed by the language development working group in the project there is a strong overlap in many language features between MSDL from Foretellix and OSC 2, so I am proposing we
start there (to reemphasize, this does not mean OSC2=MSDL).
I can make available to your projects:
- BNF for MSDL (very kindly to be shared by Foretellix)
- Language reference manual for MSDL
- As much mature documentation from the OSC2 manual as makes sense to share (e.g. language types)
- Some initial examples (this is something the implementers forum is looking at since Tuesday but it would include examples being prepared by the OSC2 project, some functional scenarios
proposed in UNECE and some ALKS examples in MSDL released by Foretellix)
I would then do my very best to find further manpower across the ASAM activities and expect interest to grow very fast once we actually have something started. Maybe we can find a topic that allows us to pool resources across projects?
Heck I would be happy to organize a hackathon or something once we have a more concrete idea what could be done and which projects are interested…
My question(s) to you are:
- Would there be interest in your projects in leveraging this to actually start implementing?
- Do you think your projects have some resources to invest in this?
- Maybe you have some suggestions on how we could get started?
Best regards,
Ben Engel
