[mylar-dev] Re: wtp user study
|
Mik,
That page does not say if this monitor would work on latest/nightly
3.2 builds... Can you please clarify?
BTW, what is the status of reenabling Mylar's own monitor? I guess it
is still interesting to see some stats for own activity.
regards,
Eugene

If you are using Mylar with WTP, please consider installing Leah
Findlater's WTP usage monitoring plug-in:
http://ws.cs.ubc.ca/~lkf/antoine
The goal of Leah's Antoine project is to learn how people are using
the WTP UI (e.g. which menus, views, and key bindings get used). Leah
has built the WTP monitoring support on top of the Mylar Monitor, and
contributed to the Mylar Monitor in the process.
--------- details ----------
The Mylar monitor gathers interaction history while ensuring anonymity
and privacy of the data you work on (uses one-way SHA hashing for
obfuscation). We used the Mylar Monitor in the initial study of Mylar
(v0.3). The Monitor's reporting facilities enable the identification
of UI usage trends. For instance, we were interested in which views
and refactorings were used most, and from our study found the
following amongst 41 JDT users:
* Selections: PackageExplorer 74%, Search 11%, Outline 10%, Call
Hierarchy 3%
* Refactoring usage: Rename 100%, Move 58%, Extract 56%, Pull Up 32%
(We expect the results from the analysis of the JDT will be published in
early summer and will send a link when they are available.)
We want to continue to improve the Mylar monitor so that it can be
used to help Eclipse plug-in developers make UI decisions that match
real usage patterns. You can help us with that now by participating
in Leah's WTP study. We also hope to set up a statistics gathering
mechanism on eclipse.org that will make it possible for the Eclipse
community to view usage trends. At that point we will make the
Monitor available as an optional Mylar download for those interested
in having their usage data influence UI decisions.
