Re: [lyo-dev] Fwd: Retiring Apache Wink project ?

Jad,
Yes, the question is related to https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=514656. That is, if the domain implementation created by the code generator does depend on OSLC4J (even though the generator its self probably doesn't), then it may also indirectly depend on Apache Wink.

This is what I'd like to have clarified.

Hi jim

Just to clarify first that the Wink discussion below is not related at all to the generator. It is purely related to the many Lyo libraries (core, client, ...) that depend on wink.

But maybe your question below is more related to the issue
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=514656?

Jad

Agreed.

I'd like to understand a bit more the relationship between the code generated by the code generator and OSLC4J SDK, including the use of Apache Wink. Jad, can you summarize?

Sounds like a reasonable idea,  with minimal effort to start with.

A third option is to continue to use Wink unmaintained and as-is until we're ready for a new JAX-RS stack.     We've only ever had one issue which required a fix on the Wink side.  In the unlikely event that another problem arises we can fork the source (or proactively fork it now) and maintain the fork for Lyo only - we've built Wink from source before and can do it again.

Lyo does have some Wink-specific code which would have to be re-written if a new JAX-RS implementation is selected.
Just some thoughts.

Mike

Dear Lyo users & developers,

Many parts of the Lyo project depend on Apache Wink (both the server and the client part). Chair of the Apache Wink, Luciano Resende (CC) suggests that unless the community members decide to step up, the project retirement will be put forward at the Apache board meeting this month.

In my opinion, we should help maintaining the project until the clear migration path off both the server and client part of Wink is clear, even though until recently Lyo mostly depended on the old 1.2.1 release of Wink (1.4.0 was released in 2013). If nobody is ready to help, I would suggest considering to accelerate on

Based on the lack of activity, the Board has asked the Apache Wink PMC
if it is time to retire the project. Those PMC members that responded
[1] indicated that they agreed it was time for retirement.

This e-mail is to make the wider community aware of the PMC's
intentions to retire the project and to provide an opportunity for
community members who would prefer to see the project continue to step
up and get more involved (e.g. work on open issues, work towards a
release, etc.)

It is currently expected that the Apache Board will consider a
resolution to retire the Apache Wink project at the April 2017 board
meeting.
