Hello,
I have created an issue with the latest local container registry struggles. The issue can be found here:
https://github.com/eclipse-kanto/container-management/issues/242
@Eduleen Talledo
and
@Dimitrov Dimitar (BD/SWD-BEA3), please continue the discussion there. That way other members of the community can easily find it and if they have the same questions, they can use
it as a reference.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Dimitrov / Kanto-team,
I did the instructions below but still cannot pull like registry.
This is the container-management.log
After editing the config.json and creating dir in etc/container-management/containers.
I restarted container-management.service before running the command kanto-cm create.
I'm not sure what did I missed?
😄
Also does kanto-cm have its own registry?
If ever has, how to use it? (push, pull, etc).
Thank you so much for your patience

Here are some instructions for setting up a local registry and then use it with kanto-cm:
kanto-cm create --ports 5000:5000 --e REGISTRY_STORAGE_DELETE_ENABLED=true --name registry docker.io/library/registry:latest
kanto-cm start -n registry
docker pull hello-world:latest
docker tag hello-world:latest localhost:5000/hello-world:latest
docker push localhost:5000/hello-world:latest
kanto-cm create -n hello --rp no localhost:5000/hello-world:latest
kanto-cm start --a -n hello
JSON files with container configurations are handled be the deployment sub-service within Kanto Container Management. The default directory is /etc/container-management/containers.
It is configurable of course, you can check the
doc and here are the default deployment values:
"home_dir": "/var/lib/container-management",
"ctr_dir": "/etc/container-management/containers"

Thank you for the heads up about the Hono Sandbox.
I'll look in to this later
😄
May I ask questions about kanto-cm?
We are currently creating a POC leveraging kanto-cm features.
However, we encountered issues over issues in our setup and stuck for a week already.
😄
* In a our ubuntu vm, we have 2 containers.
- container 1 = local docker registry
- container 2 = container with kanto setup (eclipse leda)
* We tried pulling feedercan from ghcr.io/eclipse/kuksa.val.feeders/dbc2val:v0.1.1.
- Then we pushed it in our local docker registry tagged localhost:5000/feedercan:latest
- Verified feedercan exist in localhost:5000/v2/_catalog.
* When we do systemctl restart contianer-management.service in contianer 2 it cannot find it.
- time="2024-05-23T12:10:47.479274512Z" level=info msg="trying next host" error="failed to do request: Head \"http://localhost:5000/v2/feedercan/manifests/latest\": dial
tcp [::1]:5000: connect: connection refused" host="localhost:5000"
* We also configured config.json to allow insecure_registries.
* I attached a small logfile in kanto-cm.
-

1. Can we pull images from our local docker registry?
2. Where and how can we setup kanto-cm images.json file so that kanto-cm will read it after systemctl restart contianer-management.service?

The underlined with blue is an Eclipse Hono
req-id , a generated UUID that I used for the example, it could be any string, e.g. "test123". When such identifier is included in the
command///req/<req-id>/<operation> topic, the response to this request would be returned on topic with the same identifier
command///res/<id>/<status>. You can check the Eclipse Hono MQTT Adapter documentation
here. Eclipse Ditto message format is then used for the Hono/MQTT message, so the
correlation-id comes from Ditto -
here is some documentation.

Yes. local-digital-twins and software-update services are running and suite-connector service is stopped.
Running mosquitto_pub -t edge/thing/request -m "".
The response in mosquitto_sub -t "#" -v:
I can now do software update..

The issue is in my correlation-id.
I used this correlation id to the mqtt message (underlined with red).
My question is where should I get the command (underlined with blue)?
Is this a correlation-id?

I am not sure what the problem is, here are some checks that could be done:
-
the local-digital-twins and software-update services are running
-
the suite-connector service is stopped
-
issue command -
mosquitto_pub -t edge/thing/request -m "", and check what device response( you get in the mosquitto_sub terminal, should be like
edge/thing/response {"deviceId":"ftp03:device","tenantId":"ftp03"}
-
the /var/log/software-update/software-update.log for errors

Hi Eduleen,
Yeah, this is the expected result. In the value field of the text/json is the digital twin representation of your device as
Eclipse Ditto things and features.
The architecture of Kanto is as follows, there are
suite/aws/azure connector which receive messages from the cloud and then those messages are routed to other Kanto and customer components through a local MQTT broker. So, you should host your own Hono instance(there is
no progress on the Hono Sandbox certificate issue), switch to AWS or Azure, or skip the remote connection and send messages directly to the local MQTT broker.
The last alternative is the fastest way to try out the software updates. You can use '$ mosquitto_sub -t "#" -v'
command to follow the local MQTT messages and in another terminal, you can publish a software update message. There is a message template in
hono_command_su.py. Adjusted to the device from
the screenshot you send, the command should be:
$ mosquitto_pub -t command///req/e58e52ff-4860-41e2-8dec-2495325e19c0/install -m '{

I just got through the steps of the guide on a clear system, and I was surprised to get the same result as you - no result. After a quick investigation, I found out
that you should do one additional step as the /var/lib/local-digital-twins
is not created automatically by the local-digital-twins service. The following commands should fix the problem and the structure of the digital twins should be displayed upon python script execution:
$ mkdir /var/lib/local-digital-twins
$ systemctl restart local-digital-twins.service
$ python3 hono_commands_ldt.py -t demo -d demo:device
I am sorry that you wasted some of your time due to this mistake. The creation of the
thingsDB directory will be fixed in the local-digital-twins service.

We are interested in Software update and Container management features of eclipse kanto.
Thank you for pointing me to how-to-guides/Offline explore edge device.
🙂
I'm following the steps. However, I'm not sure if the results are correct.
Here are the steps I've done.
$ sudo apt install -y wget curl git python3 python3-pip
$ sudo apt install ./kanto_0.1.0-M3_linux_x86_64.deb
* There is a note after installation:
-
-
Check if eclipse kanto components are running:
$ systemctl status suite-connector.service container-management.service software-update.service file-upload.service file-backup.service system-metrics.service local-digital-twins.service suite-bootstrapping.service
- Everything behaves as expected. Only
local-digital-twins.service and suite-bootstrapping.service are inactive.
$ pip3 install -r requirements.txt
* Cannot install due to this note:
-
* I added --break-system-packages to successfully install.
-
-
Stop suite-connector.service:
$ sudo systemctl stop suite-connector.service
-
Download offline exploration python script:
-
Configure Local digital twin config file /etc/local-digital-twins/config.json:
{
"logFile": "/var/log/local-digital-twins/local-digital-twins.log",
"caCert": "/etc/local-digital-twins/iothub.crt",
"thingsDb": "/var/lib/local-digital-twins/thing.db",
"tenantId": "demo",
"deviceId": "demo:device",
"authId": "demo_device",
"password": "secret"
}
-
Start and display status of local-digital-twins.service:
$ sudo systemctl start local-digital-twins.service
$ systemctl status local-digital-twins.service
-
-
Run hono_commands_ldt.py:
$ python3 hono_commands_ldt.py -t demo -d demo:device
- ![pythons -t demo -d derno:device
[starting] demo local digital twins app for tenant [demo], device [derno:device] at [local host]
[client connected]
IL stopped] demo local digital twins app for tenant [demo], device [derno:device] at [local host]](pngMCJ7GWvPRN.png)
-
Can I use this setup for Update software how-to-guide?

Hey Eduleen Talledo,
You can go through the
Offline explore edge device how-to guide, as it does not require cloud connection.
There are also other options depending on which Kanto components you are interested in. Eg, If you want to explore the container-management,
you can use kanto-cm CLI. You can type kanto-cm --help to check the possible commands. Keep in mind that commands are similar to others container management CLIs(docker, containerd). Do you have an understanding in which Kanto components you are interested
in?
Alternatively, you can use
Azure/AWS cloud connectors. Even thought they are not officially released and there is no public
documentation, they are functional and can be used. Kanto team could help when configuring them.
