Nothing against Slack in general, I just do not see that quick discussions make sense in a spec project (it makes lot of sense for implementation projects) as typically we only have long-term decisions.
I personally cannot participate in Slack, and I am satisfied with a discussion frequency of once-per-day on the mailing list - even with short term discussions like hanging CI/CD etc.

I do not believe Slack replaces a mailing list, each has a different use-case. Slack has limited history, it has the potential for a quick discussion, brainstorming ideas, the mailing list is better for keeping history, long-term discussion, and announcements.
