I'd avoid using final numbers as branch names. When I see that, the very 
first thought coming to my mind is that it must be tag/branch for the 
final <number> version.

Should that be my choice I use sth like "8.x", "9.0.x"... or sth more 
descriptive, like ie "jakartaee8x", "jakartaee9x"...
