I took the action item to prepare some thoughts on how we could implement clear statuses on the specification pages.

First draft of a proposal to bootstrap discussion is here:

There is also a nice-to-have add-on:

There is no PR for this as I simply did the hacking right in my browser via Chrome developer tools. It hasn't been implemented in Hugo yet.

Wanted to give time for a round of discussion and tweaking before attempting an implementation.
