I’ve seen some horrendous war files with multiple copies of the same jar just different versions. Half of the JavaEE apis in the jar. Xalan Xerces jars in war files etc. I must admit that old Spring apps are some of the worst offenders.

Absolutely -- I'm deleting superfluous stuff all the time. Sometimes 80% of the dependencies.
