Re: [iot-wg] Call for Interest: Proposing an Eclipse IoT Physical AI SIG

Red Hat is very interested in this SIG. I believe Eclipse IOT is very well positioned as a foundational software provider for physical AI workloads, and a SIG makes perfect sense for us. Count us in for sure.

Hi Eclipse IoT Community,

As AI moves out of cloud data centers and directly into physical devices, edge gateways, robotics, and embedded architectures, Physical AI is emerging as a critical frontier for our industry.

Because the Eclipse IoT portfolio powers the physical world, from microcontrollers and real-time middleware to device management and industrial gateways, almost every project in our ecosystem has a natural role to play in this evolution.

To lead this shift, we are proposing the creation of a Physical AI Special Interest Group (SIG) under Eclipse IoT, and we are looking for foundational partners to help us shape it.

What is the Physical AI SIG?

A SIG is a lightweight, member-driven forum designed to foster collaboration, share real-world architectures, and define best practices without heavy administrative overhead.

Whether your project focuses on low-latency protocols, RTOS runtimes, edge device management, or software-defined gateways, this SIG will offer a collaborative space to answer key questions:

  • How can our projects better support localised AI inference and edge autonomy?

  • What common frameworks do we need to bridge physical hardware with modern AI workflows safely and securely?

How to Get Involved

We already have strong initial backing from Steering Committee members Red Hat and Eurotech. To officially initiate the approval process, we need at least three Working Group member organisations to co-sign the proposal.

Here is our roadmap to get this off the ground:

  1. Express Initial Interest (by October 9th): Let us know if your organisation wants to help co-found or actively participate in this group.

  2. Co-Design Working Session: We plan to host a collaborative session with all interested members to draft the official SIG scope together.

  3. Public Review & Approval: The formal proposal will go to this mailing list for a 14-day public review, followed by Steering Committee approval and infrastructure setup.

Take the Next Step

If you are curious about how your project or organisation can leverage Physical AI, we would love to have you on board from day one. Please reply directly to this email or drop a message on our Slack workspace by Friday, October 9th to express your interest.

Looking forward to exploring the future of Physical AI together.

Best regards,

Ignacio Ahedo
