[iot-wg] Termination of the Edge Native Special Interest Group (SIG)

Dear Community:

The original goal of the Edge Native working group was to foster open source projects related to edge computing and drive collaboration on edge topics in our ecosystem.

Throughout the working group's lifetime, the Steering Committee of the Edge Native working group has driven the initiative forward. However, over time, it became evident that a standalone working group would not be sustainable. Consequently, it requested creating a special interest group (SIG) under the Eclipse IoT working group. The SIG was officially created in July 2023

In the last twelve months, it became clear that our SIG members did not have the time and resources to dedicate to edge-specific initiatives. Moreover, participation was low since SIG membership was restricted to Eclipse IoT Innovator and Leader members.

The issue was discussed during the SIG's March and May meetings. The attendees recommended folding the SIG's activities into the broader working group. After reviewing several options, the Steering Committee decided to terminate the SIG as recommended by its members.

The Eclipse Foundation has always expected that some Special Interest Groups will only exist for a limited period. Per the Steering Committee's recommendation and consistent with the Eclipse Foundation Working Group Process [1], the Special Interest Group is being formally wrapped up effective immediately.

This does not mean the Eclipse IoT community no longer cares about edge computing. Current market dynamics frame the discussion of edge computing topics in the scope of IoT and Industrial Automation architectures. Consequently, edge computing topics will still be discussed in our monthly Eclipse IoT community meetings. The removal of membership requirements will facilitate discussion and collaboration among a larger group of Eclipse IoT members.

I want to emphasise that our Edge Computing projects, such as Eclipse Kanto, Eclipse Kura, and Eclipse zenoh, remain active. I encourage all those interested in Edge Native to continue following the related projects.

On behalf of the Eclipse Foundation, thank you to everyone in the Edge Native community for the work accomplished and the collaboration seen.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions.
