Do you have examples of 3rd-party content that would break the IDE, or be broken when upgrading?
I've been using the same Eclipse installation since February, I've used updates from Mars.M4 to Mars.1 and I'm now on Neon M3, and I didn't get such issue, with several 3rd party extensions installed. I have the impression that breaking 3rd-party plugin is actually not very probable, and that Eclipse provides all mechanism to prevent such issues (OSGi, API Tools...), so that we're being conservative about updates whereas the world doesn't need that.
