[hyades-dev] Re: Formatting for logged messages

Allan,

I agree that a standard format would be beneficial. Currently, all of the existing Hyades messages with IDs follow the first format in your examples (<space> between ID & message). Unless I receive any objections, I recommend we keep that precedent. For all on copy, feel free to respond by noon EDT (1700 BST) today if you want to provide a counter-proposal.

FYI - I've attached the existing messages w/IDs here:

Formatting for logged messagesRobert Sinclair
Robert,

Thanks for distributing these. I have another question about formatting.

Is there a convention for what appears between the IWAT part of the message and the plain-text part?

Here are three possible answers to this question:
IWAT5201E Can't get required resource (space)
IWAT5201E - Can't get required resource (space-dash-space)
IWAT5201E: Can't get required resource (colon-space)

I realize there is no requirement to use a particular format - it won't change the machine-readable part of this system - but I think we should pick a convention and recommend it to everybody.

I vote for "colon-space" as in the last example above. But I'm not married to my choice, only to the idea that we should have a convention. I'd be happy to follow an existing convention if there is one for other people using the XXXXnnnnA system.

Logged Message ID Ranges
All,

Below is the Message ID number ranges to be used by each Hyades group.

0000-1200 Toronto (Eugene/Richard)
2000-2200 Lexington (Joe)
3000-3200 Raleigh (Kent)
4000-4200 Toulouse (Dominique)
5000-5200 Cupertino (Tanuj)
6000-6200 Scapa (Mike)

The format is IWATxxxxA, where xxxx is a number in your range, and A is either I (informational), W (warning), S (severe), or E (error).

Each group is responsible for designating the specific IDs within the appropriate range. Please keep track of your ID/message combinations, as we will plan to centrally post these. If you expect to exceed the range allocated to your group, please let me know, so the range can be increased and communicated to all.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks.
