So here are my 2 cent:

1) We should include this issue in the appropriate "Know Issues" section
of our online help. I know that it is not really an "Issue" but I think
we should provide the user with that information.

2) How about implementing an automatically triggered tooltip that pops
up on the corresponding text fields whenever the user enters a
potentially erroneous string/character? We know this for instance from
password fields that very often show such a tooltip if the user has
activated his caps lock. This would give the user immediate response but
would not reformat his input or even force him to reformat his input.
