Re: [ee4j-pmc] Hierarchical project structure

Agreed - and it will either pick up support or not over time as we get more experience in EE4J. I already brought up another topic with Kevin (unrelated - readoption of JAX-WS and JAXB into EE as they exit SE) as something we should log as an issue for the PMC to consider so we do need an issue process. Is there a plan for a PMC github repo against which issues like this can be raised/tracked? I'll be happy to raise it there to come back to in the future if we see a need.

Ian

This is probably the sort of thing that we should move to either a Bugzilla record or a GitHub Issue so that others can engage and we can track the decision. Feel free to do so if you feel that it's worth consideration.

Certainly no messing about here before we are bootstraped, and only if it seems valuable. By "working around" I mean things we have discussed previously about easy of navigation between peer projects and now the web sites for those projects. Maybe once we have progressed the branding name and created web pages associated with this then an overarching organizational view can be represented here.

Re: [ee4j-pmc] Short names and URLs

A hierarchical structure is more work for the project team. By introducing an extra level of hierarchy, you are introducing extra projects which require additional management. Just setting them up requires that you come up with names. What resources are allocated to the organizational nodes? Do those extra nodes in the hierarchy have their own websites? Who has what roles on those organizational nodes?

Frankly, it's not all that much more work for me.

What, specifically, are we doing to work around a "flat" structure?

If there is some demonstrable value in having a hierarchy within EE4J, we can introduce it. But let's do that after we get what we have bootstrapped.

Wayne, a hierarchical structure might be more work for Eclipse but every time we discuss this we seem to end up trying to work around the flat structure. I don't want to slow us down by reopening this but I would not be surprised if a year along we found ourselves needing to do that. There's a level of collective scale here that a project hierarchy may have a benefit that eclipse has not observed before

If the web sites for all the EE4J projects were under
http://www.eclipse.org/ee4j/, that would at least make the naming consistent.  Ditto https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/ee4j/.  Is there some reason not to do that?

The project space is absolutely a hierarchy. e.g. look at the "Related Links" on the right of
https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/ecd

I tend to argue against making a hierarchy any deeper than <root>/<tlp>/<project> because making it deeper adds work that doesn't add value.
