Re: [ee4j-community] Eclipse is still behind the current state of Java EE 8

Hi,

I was responsible for adding Java EE 8 support to the Java EE Tools component of WTP.  As of Oxygen.2, WTP has support for the following Java EE 8 projects:
- Web 4.0
- Web Fragment 4.0
- EAR / Application 8.0
- App Client 8.0
- JAX-RS 2.1

The following are not supported:
- JPA 2.2 (JPA support is provided by Oracle in the Dali project in WTP)
- JSF 2.3 (I can't remember who provided JSF support in the past)

We've tried contacting Oracle regarding a release outlook for JPA 2.2 support in WTRP and we were told that they do not have any current plans to add support for JPA 2.2. As they have always provided support for JPA and most of the committers on the Dali project are Oracle employees, it will be non-trivial for someone outside of Oracle to provide support for it before Photon GAs. Someone from the community will need to step up and work with the Dali committers to provide the support for JPA 2.2.

Regards,

John Collier
Committer, WTP Java EE Tools

Hi,

Not sure, if it'll cover all of Java EE 8 but there is a WebTools release scheduled for the annual Photon Release Train:

There basically always is, but there's not really a plan published (see same project site). I got the idea a lot of the focus at Red Hat these days is to support the AngularJS tooling that Red Hat is working on, but I'm not 100% sure.

Nick from Red Hat (https://github.com/nickboldt) is the biggest committer at the moment for WTP: https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/webtools/who

This gives some overview of the activity per repo:

https://github.com/eclipse?utf8=✓&q=webtools

Specifically for Java EE the following are interesting I think:

https://github.com/eclipse/webtools.javaee/commits/master
https://github.com/eclipse/webtools.servertools/commits/master
https://github.com/eclipse/webtools.jsf/commits/master

Quickly glancing through the commits I don't think even JSF 2.2 (Java EE 7) support has yet be worked on, and certainly not JSF 2.3.

I've bcc'ed the PMC and committers Nick and John.

@Elson, could you perhaps shed some light on the EE 7/EE 8 support plans for WTP?

Kind regards,
Arjan Tijms

No, I am sorry but I do not. That question should be directed to the
wtp-dev or wtp-pmc lists.
