Our next call will be held on May 13, 2020. =====

  1. Industry Use Case and Requirements - Mobile Devices

  • Remote power plants / industrial plants (no network access on the site)

  • Controlled access sites

Workers on such sites probably have a mobile device. They cannot rely on a solution requiring constant connectivity. The idea is to make backend apps modular in a way that the parts needed by field workers can run from the device when there is no connectivity. In other words, we want to run containerized workloads on the mobile device.

Discussion

Big difference between typical edge node and a mobile device is that edge nodes are managed by the organization and used 100% for corporate purposes, while a mobile deviced is typically used for non-corporate purposes even if it is provided by the organization. Geofencing can help here, as use of corporate data and business logic

Running containers on off the shelf devices not possible. Do we absolutely need containers? Probably not. However, using containers is possible if the devices are owned and provided by the organization. This requires a customized version of Android. But doing this will need changes to be made to the Android kernel.

Kynetics working on a version of the Android agent for Android. This will leverage containers. Horizon for a working demo could be 60 days.

The Rust rewrite of zenoh can run on Android right now. Fog05 will eventually run, but it will be more complicated to make it run.

Ideally, the smartphone's sensors and cameras will be accessible by the services running in the container. Hardware abstraction is a big issue to solve, however. You do not want to code against specific devices but rather leverage a stable API.

  1. Edge-related questions for the 2020 Eclipse IoT developer survey

The attendees worked on a set of questions using this deck

In the end, it was decided to include questions on slides #4, #6 and #7 in the survey.

  1. News of the Edge Ecosystem

There was no time to cover this point, as the meeting ran 30 minutes over.
