[edge-wg] Eclipse Edge Native WG call minutes — April 15, 2020

Hi everyone.

You will find the minutes from the April 15, 2020 call below. Minutes from prior meetings are available in this document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XIv3-SYK-HadgScJ_H4tKvwRhGsig7uLg7n0Xzvwza0

=====
  1. Edge Landscape white paper

    • Kilton and Frédéric fleshed out the outline

    • Working sessions to be scheduled in the next few weeks

      • Robert Andres (Eurotech) willing to pitch in

      • Adrian O’Sullivan (Huawei) will add details about 5g to the outline and is willing to contribute to that section.

    • What we are trying to achieve is to have something more focused and easier to understand than the CNCF Edge landscape.

  2. ioFog and fog05

    • fog05 v0.2: End of June or July

    • zenoh: rewrite from oCaml to Rust is underway

      • oCaml less performant; single threaded only

      • oCaml community small; difficult to attract contributors since few know the language

      • Rust memory protection and small footprint also considerations

    • ioFog v2.0

      • V1.3 has been very stable. Will take extra time to make 2.0 as stable as 1.3

      • Improvements to the documentation needed

      • New target date: June 1, 2020

      • Feature set is the same

      • Long-term roadmap mostly the same

    • What is the relationship between ioFog and fog05?

      • Kai — It would be useful to understand overlap and differences between the two

      • Frédéric — My short take on the topic is this: ioFog is about container orchestration at the Edge while fog05 is a unified compute fabric spanning from microcontroller to edge to cloud

      • Luca — There is no central controller in fog05. Fog05 is a decentralized fabric; nodes are heterogeneous. It can work in a full peer-to-peer node, but you can cluster them to make the infrastructure scale. Zenoh is about distributed storage

      • Kilton — ioFog is centrally managed. Concept of the ECN is also essential. Skupper can be seen as a Dynamic DNS replacement inside

      • Are ioFog and fog05 more focused on specific verticals?

        • Both are general-purpose platforms but each has its sweet spots. We need to identify those

  3. Vertical deep dives for future meetings
    • We had evoked the possibility to have deep dives to understand edge computing use cases in a variety of verticals. We need to start planning those

      • Sven Erik from Bosch (project Kuksa) willing to share his perspective on the automotive market

      • Harald Mueller from Siemens can share requirements around Edge use cases for mobile devices and applications

      • Adrian O’Sullivan from Huawei can talk about 5g / Telco use cases

      • We will have automotive and mobile on the next call; Telco will be the call after that
