Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] sessions for beginners

The email below reminded me about eclipsecon in Washington (2012?) where there was this event where anyone could signup to demo their project/product at the same time and
then everyone voted for their favorite.

I actually don't know if it was deemed a success by the audience but I can remember it was superfun and competitive and I believe we got much more feedback/interaction with the audience than the plain booth duty.

I was wondering if:

A) something similar could be planned for vendors/booths this year

B) if this approach of demoing all at the same time with votes for participation would work ?

...another format I've participated in in the past is Red Hat booth at JavaOne where there were planned mini sessions (~20-30 min) on a topic. These sessions were announced beforehand
andtook place where there was traffic which brought others in.

Wondering if that could be something useful - have these tutorial sessions that are about eclipse IDE be part of the conference demo floor ? or maybe during the poster or bar sessions ?

Hey!

My suggestion is that we target someone new to Eclipse who is doing Java development. The focus is on making them productive with the tools. I would imagine potential topics might include (in no specific order):
- Debugging
- Building with Maven
- Plugin development
- Tips and tricks for using JDT
- Git integration
- ????

Hopefully other people have some ideas??

I like the idea of having a slightly more focussed bootcamp. And the focus in Java makes sense to me.

But aside from that I also like the idea of those small-sized little bootcamp stations where you can learn how to get started with Eclipse for Android, Python, JavaScript, Spring, and C++ (to name just a few). To me if feels like a separate session. What about having one main bootcamp (how to get started with Eclipse for Java) for 2h or so, followed by small bootcamps in parallel for 1h about the small topics, more in the style of sitting around a group of tables then? That would make up for a 3h session in total.

For the RCP app development, I would suggest that is a tutorial proposal and not make it part of the boot camp.

For the main Java-focussed bootcamp:
- would leave RCP out of this Java-centric bootcamp
- would leave writing plugins for Eclipse out as well
- add a section on Mylyn (issue tracker integration, etc.)

Cheers,
-Martin

I hope this helps.
Ian

Hey all --

I noticed nobody has added to my tab in the spreadsheet -- below is what I have scribbled.

Can we discuss on the email thread or can people take a moment to contribute feedback / ideas to the tab in the google doc?

thanks!
Tamar

Office Hours
a room with tables (labeled) of experts in various areas. This could be towards the end of the boot camp day, or it could be separate. Tables could include: RCP, Java, Python, Javascript, Android, IoT, EMF; tables could mirror lunch tables?
RCP development
a boot camp to start from scratch and end with an RCP app? Maybe make a new example one and contribute it to public wiki / tutorials?
Java debugging
Audience should already know how to code in Java, focus could be on best practices with debugging.
Python development
Show how to configure Pydev, how to debug local python scripts / applications and how to connect to remote environments for debugging.
Javascript development
Android development
Continuous integration / infrastructure
discussion of CI and tools to support it
