FWIW, dinner at a hotel conference facility would start at $80, not
including alcohol, and might be closer to $100. We spend about $60
on the plated lunch.

Skerrett:offer food
Unfortunately hotels don't work that way. For large groups we
need to pre-order food and it is not cheap. The mark-up hotels
put on food and beverage is huge.
I have the feeling we all agree that the former way of having some
kind of dinner (reception buffet or thelike) at the conference and
then head to the BoFs was the ideal solution. If "only" the
monetary aspect of the food is what prevents it now, would it be a
reasonable option to offer food at the conference for an extra
price that each interested attendee has to pay? Maybe it's not
possible but personally I'd love to pay, let's say, 20 bucks for
it.
Cheers
